Owls Race Past Knights, 4-1

The 41st ranked Rice Owls opened play in the 53rd Rice Invitational by making quick work of C-USA rice UCF, downing the Knights 4-1 at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Saturday afternoon. In earlier action, South Florida downed Texas A&M Corpus Christi 4-1.
Harry Fowler and Oscar Podlewski combined for three of the Owls four points on the day. The pair combined to clinch the doubles point with an 8-5 win at No. 1 to combine with an 8-1 win by Sam Garforth-Bles and Christian Saravia to give Rice a 1-0 lead.
Fowler, currently ranked 87th in singles, wasted no time in running the lead to 2-0, but winning 16 of 17 games on his way to a straight set win at No. 1. Saravia gave the Owls their second point of the day with a straight set win at No. 4. After Matthew Zachary put UCF on the board with a win at No. 6, Podlewski closed out the match with a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 2.
The Owls will wrap up play in the 53rd Rice invitational when they meet #60 Texas A&M Corpus Christi tomorrow after the conclusion of the Rice women's match with TCU. UCF and South Florida will meet at 9 am on the Rice Recreation Courts.
