Owls Fall to Tulsa, 5-2

The 48th ranked Rice Owls could not rebound from a rugged start and dropped a 5-2 decision to 30th ranked Tulsa in a Conference USA matchup at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa on Tuesday.
`Obviously, we are not pleased with the result today," Owls head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "But give credit to Tulsa. They stepped up and simply outplayed us at a few positions. Jess and Dominique both had solid weekends and the hunger they showed in all circumstances was excellent."
Tulsa jumped out fast to grab the doubles point by taking wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The Golden Hurricane then stormed to the clinching point by taking wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles, before the Owls struck back with a pair of singles wins by capturing decisive tie-breakers.
Freshman Dominique Harmath split the first two sets with Anastasia Erofeeva before taking the match with a 10-5 win in the super tiebreaker. Senior Jessica Jackson followed with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Jo-Anne Karaitiana to close the gap to 4-2, winning the tiebreaker, 7-1.
Senior Rebekka Hänle and Tulsa's Alexandra Kichoutkin close the match out with a grueling three-set match at No. 1 singles, with Kichoutkin outlasting Hänle 12-10 in the super tiebreaker.
The Owls will wrap up a stretch of six consecutive road matches on Saturday when they travel to College Station to take on Texas A&M. The match start time has been moved back from its original 1 p.m. start time to 3 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in order to allow A&M fans to .
The start time of the Texas A&M women's tennis match against Rice on Saturday, March 5 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center has been changed to 3 p.m.
The match, originally slated to begin at 1 p.m., was moved back two hours to allow fans to attend both the tennis match and the Aggie men's basketball game against Texas Tech, which tips at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday at Reed Arena.
