Owls Fall to Aggies

The Rice women's tennis team closed out a six-match road swing by dropping a 7-0 decision to Texas A&M, but the final score hardly told the story of the match that took more than four hours to complete.
Elizabeth Schmidt's 48th ranked Owls took five of six singles matches to three sets, but the 32nd ranked Aggies sent the crowd of over 300 spectators happy by battling back after losing four of six singles first sets to improve their record to 5-2.
"Texas A&M played a solid match today," Schmidt said. "With five of six matches going to three sets it was obviously a battle out there, but credit the Aggies for stepping up when we put their backs against the wall. We'll take a few days off after a very physical week and then get back to work to prepare for another busy weekend," she added.
After the Aggies captured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, Rice received a boost heading into singles when its No. 1 team of Rebekka Hänle and Ana Guzman battled back from a 4-2 deficit to defeat A&M's 69th ranked team of Janelle Cuthbertson and Christi Liles, 8-6.
The Owls then came out hot in singles, winning the first set at the first four positions. After Daniella Trigo battled back to win her second set at No. 5, the Owls appeared in position to take control of the match. But the Aggies rallied to win all the remaining sets and take the match.
The Owls will be back on their familiar Jake Hess Tennis Stadium courts on Friday when they host Wake Forest at 10 a.m.
