The Rice women's tennis team opened with a strong effort in doubles, but could not sustain that effort as the 17th ranked Texas Longhorns blanked the Owls 7-0 a the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin on Saturday.
The Owls split the opening two doubles matches, thanks to an 8-4 win by Jessica Jackson and Danny Trigo at No. 3, but the Longhorns grabbed the doubles point when their No. 1 duo of Krista Damico and Aeriel Ellis outlasted Rebekka Hänle and Ana Guzman in a tie-breaker.
The Horns jumped out to a fast start in singles, sweep all six spots, with Hänle the only Owl to win a set.
"Despite the final score, we definitely had our chances today." Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. " It was unfortunate we couldn't finish off that doubles point, but credit to Texas for stepping up at the key moments. These early season tests are a great opportunity for our team to learn about ourselves. I know we will take this loss today and be better from it moving forward. We are all looking forward to the national indoor qualifier and our 1st round match against OSU," she added.
The Owls will return to action next Saturday when they face Oklahoma State in the opening round of the ITA National Team Indoors Qualifiers, which will be held at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco.
