The 44th ranked Rice women's tennis team opened the 2011 spring season by sweeping past Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 7-0 at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the Rice campus on Tuesday afternoon.
After a morning of fog and mist subsided, the Owls quickly showed that their work at improving their performance in doubles was paying immediate dividends. The Owls top two teams (Ana Guzman and Rebekka Hänle at No. 1 and Alex Rasch and Dominique Harmath at No. 2) each raced to 8-2 wins to clinch the point. Jessica Jackson and Daniella Trigo made it a sweep, winning 8-6.
I was very pleased the way we came out in doubles," Owls head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "We've been working hard in improving there, so to win all three was a great way to start. Overall, this was a solid win for us to kick off the season," she noted.
Rice added straight set wins in each of the singles matches to close things out. They will take to the road this weekend, facing 17th ranked Texas in Austin on Saturday.
"It was good to get this one in before we head to Austin on Saturday ," Schmidt said. "It will be a good early test for us and we look forward to the challenge."
