Turnovers Plague Rice in 66-43 Loss to UTEP

EL PASO - UTEP scored 22 points off 16 Rice turnovers as the Miners recorded their 12th straight home victory with a 66-43 win.
With the victory, UTEP improved to 15-4 and 3-1 in Conference USA play. The Miners have not lost at home since a 66-61 loss to Pacific in their season opener. Rice continues to search for its first conference win. The Owls are now 8-10 and 0-4.
UTEP led 31-23 at the break then started the second half by outscoring the Owls 16-1 to begin the period. Rice turned the ball over six times on its first seven offensive possessions.
The Miners' run was capped by a pair of Julyan Stone assists on three-pointers by Christian Polk and Jeremy Willilams. The back-to-back assists gave Stone five for the game as he became Conference USA's all-time assist leader.
Williams scored 14 points, including a 3-for-3 from three-point range, to lead the Miners. Randy Culpepper, the 2010 Conference USA Player of the Year, was held to 12 points. Culpepper, who entered the game averaging better than 20 points, was 5-for-8 from the field.
Rice was led by freshman David Chadwick who scored a game-high 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Chadwick also had three rebounds and an assist in 24 minutes of play.
Sophomore forward Arsalan Kazemi, who is one of 20 players nationally to be averaging a double-double, had 10 rebounds but was held to 1-for-7 shooting to finish with two points.
UTEP led by as many as 12 in the first half when Jeremy Williams knocked down his second three-pointer of the half to give the Miners a 28-16 lead.
Lucas Kuipers would answer at the other end with a triple. After a free throw by UTEP's John Bohannon, David Chadwick knocked down an outside shot for the Owls. The two teams traded baskets to end the period. Randy Culpepper scored inside for the Miners before Tamir Jackson drove inside for a floater to beat the clock.
Rice returns to action Saturday when the squad travels to UCF. The Owls are back at home Jan. 26 when they play host to Houston. UTEP is back in action Saturday at UH.
