Owls Celebrate Senior Day By Blanking UAB, 7-0

The 41st ranked Rice women's tennis team saluted seniors Julie Chao and Rebecca Lin in style on Senior Day, blanking UAB, 7-0 at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
"It was great to get the win today and to see how the team approached this match," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "I was so happy to be able to have Julie and Becca end their home careers with a win. They have both meant so much to this program and had such productive careers. This was a great way for their last match at Jake Hess to end," she added.
The Owls made quick work of the doubles point, taking the matches at No. 3 and No. 1 by identical 8-0 scores. Chao and Ana Guzman, who are currently ranked 45th in the country, clinched the doubles point with their 14th in in 22 matches this year. After Alex Rasch and Jessica Jackson pushed the lead to 3-0, it fell to Lin to clinch the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4. It was Lin's 50th career win in singles at Rice.
The Owls (13-8) matched their win total from 2009 with the win and evened their conference mark at 2-2 heading into the Conference USA Championships next weekend in Tulsa.
"This was a good way to bring the season to a close and a great way to get ready for the conference championships next weekend. We will have to wait until Monday to know who we will play first, but I know our team is ready to go to Tulsa and compete for the team title," Schmidt stated.
