The 47th ranked Rice Owls reached their eighth consecutive conference championship semifinal round with a 4-0 win over Tulane in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championships at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Friday.
"This was a very solid start to the tournament," Owls' head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "We knew we would be in for a battle with Tulane and our players were very focused from the beginning. I was also pleased with how we handled the last minute move indoors. We are really excited to get another shot at Tulsa tomorrow," Schmidt added.
The match was moved indoors due to rain and the match order was switched with the singles matches being played first and the Owls (13-8) worked quickly to dispatch the Green Wave and advance to a showdown with Tulsa on Saturday at noon.
Jessica Jackson downed Elizabeth Hamlin, 6-0, 6-1, followed by Rebecca Lin and Rebekka Hänle. Freshman Daniella Trigo then clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hila Elster to closed out the match.
Saturday's match with Tulsa will be a rematch between the two schools , with the Golden Hurricane taking a 5-2 decision on March 13 at the Case Tennis Center. The Owls have dropped four straight to Tulsa with their last win coming on March 25, 2006 when they took a 4-3 decision at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
