Rice Has Two Named to C-USA Academic Team

IRVING - Rice University student-athletes Connor Frizzelle and Lucas Kuipers have been named to the 2010 Conference USA All-Academic Team the league office announced on Friday.
Both Frizzelle and Kuipers are two-time members of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and have seen action in all 29 games heading into Saturday's regular-season finale against UCF. As sophomores, neither player has yet declared a major.
Frizzelle carries a 3.40 grade point average. On the court, the DeSoto native is averaging 8.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists. He has started 15 games this season, including Wednesday when he finished with 12 points against Houston. Frizzelle leads Rice with 38 three-pointers made. Earlier this season he was named the Rice Basketball Challenge's Most Valuable Player after averaging 14.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists.
Kuipers owns a 3.28 grade point average. The Rochester, Minn., native returned to the Owls' starting lineup during league play and has started 16 games this season including the Owls' last 11. He is averaging 8.3 points and 3.5 rebounds for the season and 9.4 points in conference play. Over the Owls' last seven games, Kuipers is averaging 12.4 points per contest. He also leads Rice with an .829 free throw percentage.
Rounding out the five-player team was UAB guard George Drake, a graduate student working towards a Master's in Health Education, UTEP junior guard Isaac Gordon and UCF's sophomore guard Isaac Sosa.
Student-athletes with a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better who are starters or key reserves on their respective teams were eligible for selection to the team. The team was voted on by the league's sports information directors for men's basketball.
With UCF playing at Rice Saturday, three members of the league's all-academic team will be on the court at Tudor Fieldhouse Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
Following Saturday's game, the Owls will be back in action next Wednesday when they open play at the 2010 GMC Sierra C-USA Men's Basketball Championship set to be played at the BOK Center in downtown Tulsa, Okla.
