
Owls Lose at SMU, 73-54

Dallas - SMU's Brittany Gilliam led all scorers with 24 points to lead the SMU Mustangs to a 73-54 victory over the visiting Rice Owls in Moody Coliseum. Jackie Stanley and D'Frantz Smart led Rice (11-12, 5-5) with 16 and 15 points respectively. Stanley also had 8 rebounds to lead the Owls and Smart passed a game-high 7 assists.
SMU (16-7, 6-4) forged a 31-17 half-time lead by shooting 45 percent and forcing 12 turnovers, while limiting the Owls to 24 percent (6-25) shooting from the field.
The Owls improved their shooting in the second-half at 37 percent, but SMU remained strong from the field at 48 percent. Each squad committed 17 turnovers and each scored 14 points off of turnovers for the game, but the Mustangs ruled the paint by outscoring Rice 38 to 18.
Jillian Samuels added 16 points, while Alice Severin scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Mustangs. Also, Christine Elliott tallied 8 points with 11 boards.
