Natchitoches, La. - Five players scored in double-digits as the Rice Owls women's basketball team defeated Northwestern State 80-44 Tuesday night. It is Rice's third win in a row and first since beating HBU 82-46 on Dec. 21. The Owls are now 7-5 heading into Thursday's game at Texas State. The Lady Demons, meanwhile, fall to 4-8 on the season.
Not only did Rice have five players scoring in double-digits, it was also balanced. Junior Brianna Hypolite led with a game-high 14 points and freshman Jessica Kuster tallied 13 points with a career-high 18 rebounds. Morgan Mayse had 13 points, while Jessica Goswitz and Amenemope McKinney each contributed 12 points.
The Owls led by 12 at the half (36-24) in limiting the Lady Demons to only 33 percent shooting from the field, while making 46 percent from the floor for themselves. It did not get better in the second-half for NSU, as the Rice defense stifled the Lady Demon offense. NSU only shot 18 percent (7-38) in the final 20 minutes and was outscored by Rice an astounding 44 to 20. The Owls finished the evening shooting 45.6 percent to Northwestern State's 25 percent.
The Lady Demons were led in scoring by Trudy Armstead and Jordan James with 12 points apiece. Brittiany Houston chipped in 10 points as well.
Rice also owned the boards by outrebounding NSU 56 to 35.
