San Marcos, Texas - Rice's Jessica Kuster posted her second-straight double-double with a game-high 26 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to lead the Owls to a convincing 97-50 victory over Texas State Thursday evening. For Kuster, it was also her team-leading third double-double of the season.
The Owls (8-5) were behind 5-4 early in the contest (16:34), but Rice then went on a 10-0 run to forge a 14-5 lead and eventually outscored the Bobcats 50 to 18 in the first-half. The Rice defense held Texas State to only five made field goals (5-28) for a lowly 17.9 percent field goal percentage in the first 20 minutes. Kuster outscored Texas State (4-8) in the first-half 19 to 18 and she grabbed 11 rebounds as the Owls shot 44 percent (18-41).
For the game, the Owls finished shooting 49 percent from the field as Rice head coach Greg Williams was able to substitute freely throughout the game. Ten Rice players logged 11 minutes or more in the game.
Rice's Brianna Hypolite and Candace Ashford also scored in double-digits for the Owls. Hypolite finished with 18 points, while Ashford came off the bench to score a season-high 13 points.
Ashely Ezeh was the only Bobcat to score in double-digits with 11.
The 47-point victory margin is not the largest winning margin in the Greg Williams era. The Owls won by 51 when they defeated UTEP 83-32 on Jan. 27, 2006. It is, however the largest winning margin of the season and second largest in the Williams' era. Previously this season, Rice defeated HBU by 36 (82-46) on Dec. 21 and Northwestern State by 40 (80-40) on Dec. 28.
Rice is in action when it hosts Lamar on Jan. 2 with a noon tip-off inside Tudor Fieldhouse. The Rice-Lamar game will be followed by the Rice men's basketball tilt vs. Texas Christian, scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
