- After Rice scored on its opening drive, Tulsa scored 41 unanswered points and the Golden Hurricane went on to post a 64-27 win over the Owls.
- Rice captains for the Tulsa game were Pierre Beasley, Travis Bradshaw, Jake Hicks and Justin Hill. Rice won the toss and deferred to the second half. The Owls began the game by defending the south goal.
- The Tulsa game marked the second game of a three-game road swing. Factoring in an open date during the stretch, Rice is in the midst of a 35-day stretch in which the Owls are away from Rice Stadium. The Owls play at Tulane next week before closing out the year with back-to-back home games - vs. East Carolina (Nov. 20) and UAB (Nov. 27).
- For the sixth time in nine games, Rice scored on its opening drive. It was the fourth time the Owls scored a touchdown. The Owl defense force a three-and-out to start the game. The contest marked the fifth time the Owls have held an opponent scoreless on an opening drive (four punts, one scoreless on downs).
Offense
- Rice senior wide receiver Patrick Randolph started his fifth-straight game. The Rice receiver's father, Paul Randolph, was coaching across the field on the Tulsa sideline. The senior Randolph is the Executive Senior Associate Head Coach and Co-Defensive Coordinator for the Golden Hurricane. Patrick Randolph caught a career-long, 50-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the game.
- Sam McGuffie had a 50-yard run late in the first quarter - the longest of his career (He had a 29-yard run during his career at Michigan and his long at Rice up until the run against TU was 15 yards).
- McGuffie recorded his first 100-yard game as a Rice Owl. He finished with a career-high 178 yards on 28 carries. McGuffie's previous career, rushing high was 131 yards against Notre Dame on Sept. 13, 2008. The Tulsa game Saturday marked McGuffie's third career, 100-yard game. He had two as a freshman at Michigan.
- McGuffie's 178 yards was the most since Quinton Smith had 183 yards at UCF on Oct. 21, 2006.
- McGuffie's 28 rushing attempts was also a new career standard. His previous mark came during his freshman season at Michigan (25).
- Luke Willson had a 55-yard touchdown catch in the game, marking a career- long reception. His previous career long was 52 yards. Willson also had a 30-yard reception. With 85 receiving yards, Willson was one yard shy of equaling a career mark (86 yards) set earlier this season against North Texas.
- Taylor Cook saw his most extensive playing time, playing the entire second half. His 55-yard touchdown pass to Willson was the first of his career at Rice. Cook was 6-of-11 for 122 yards.
Defense
- Jamael Thomas forced a fumble when he sacked TU quarterback G.J. Kinne in the first quarter. It was the second sack in as many games for Thomas.
- Rice starting defensive tackle Michael Smith had two tackles for a combined 12 ost yards in the game, marking the junior's first multi-tackle for lost game. He finished with four total tackles.
Special Teams
- Rice place kicker Chris Boswell saw his first career action handling kickoff duties in the Tulsa game.
- Phillip Gaines blocked Tulsa's first point after try. The block was the first of Gaines' career and allowed the Owls to hold a 7-6 lead early in the game. The blocked PAT early in the game was the first blocked PAT by a Rice since Oct. 18, 2008 against Southern Miss.
- Rice was also credited with a blocked field goal in the first quarter.
