El Paso, Texas - Rice's four-game winning-streak came to a halt as the Owls fell 74-64 to the Miners of UTEP at the Don Haskins Center. The Owls' Jackie Stanley posted her third double-double of the season with 25 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs.
Sophomore guard D'Frantz Smart was the only other Owl in double-digits with 14 points. Junior forward Morgan Mayse had 9 points and 7 rebounds, while sophomore forward Megan Elliott snared 10 rebounds.
UTEP (10-5, 1-0) held a 28-22 edge at half-time as Jareica Hughes (9) and Dietra Caldwell (11) combined for 20 of those points.
Back-to-back buckets by Staney and then Mayse brought Rice (6-8, 0-1) to within 2 at 30-28 with 17:45 left in the game. It was 32-30 in the Miners' favor when Hughes converted a four-point after being fouled by Smart on a three-pointer to make it 36-30.
But, the Owls battled back.
Three-straight three-pointer baskets (two by Jessica Goswitz and one by Smart) enabled Rice to tie the game at 49 at the 9:29 mark. UTEP then went on an 11-1 run to forge a 60-50 lead at 5:03 it would not relinquish.
A lay-up by Stanley with 1:19 left brought Rice to within 5 points at 69-64, but the Miners' Caldwell then converted two free throws. The Owls had their chances but turned the ball over on two of its next three possessions before Ashley Milian's lay-up with 14 seconds left sealed the win for UTEP.
Stanley scored 19 of her points in the second-half. With Stanley in the paint, the Owls dominated UTEP in the lane, outscoring UTEP 28 to 18, but the Miners outscored Rice 18 to 12 in second-chance opportunities.
Hughes led UTEP with 22 points, while Caldwell tallied 20 and Briana Green finished with 14.
Rice now plays at Tulane on Sunday at 1 p.m. in New Orleans at Fogelman Arena. The game will be shown live on CBS College.
