Rice Races Past San Diego

The 34th-ranked Rice men's tennis team opened their spring break action on the West Coast by downing the University of San Diego 5-2 on Tuesday at the USD West Tennis Courts.
Rice swept through the three doubles matches to grab the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. The Owls then raced to wins in four of the first five singles matches against the 63rd-ranked Toreros to clinch their ninth win in 13 matches this year.
The Owls will remain in San Diego through the weekend to compete in the 120th Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships which open play at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club on Thursday.
The tournament is the second-oldest tennis event in the United States and has a rich tournament history. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West. This coast to coast rivalry was the inspiration for the Davis Cup. Past Winners include Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston, and John McEnroe.
The field includes college teams from Pepperdine, UCLA, USC, CAL, Stanford, Fresno State, San Diego State, UC San Diego, Notre Dame, Villanova, and Boston College.
The Owls have entered four doubles teams into the USTA-sanctioned event. Christoph Müller & Tobias Scheil will play an opening match at 5:30 on Wednesday, while the teams of Isamu Tachibana & Bruno Rosa, Dennis Polyakov & Sam Garforth-Bles and Vishnu Rajam & Owls assistant coach Efe Ustundang have their openers at 6:30 (central time).
Rice will return home for their first match at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in six weeks when they host Duke (March 13) and Southern Miss (March 15).
