
UMass Beats Rice 71 to 57

Miami, Fla. - The Rice Owls women's basketball team dropped a 71 to 57 decision to UMass in the first round of the Wyndham Miami Thanksgiving Tournament held at the BankUnited Center. Tara Watts and Morgan Mayse led the Owls (0-5) in scoring with season-highs of 13 and 12 points respectively. Mayse also had a game-high 8 rebounds. The Minutewomen were led by Kristina Danella's 21 points, while Megan Zullo added 10.
Rice was behind 40-27 at the half in shooting 32 percent, while UMass connected on 52 percent. Each squad made 21 field goals with UMass sinking 7 treys to Rice's 6, but the Minutewomen converted 22-23 at the free throw line, while Rice was 9 of 10 at the charity stripe. UMass made 42 percent from the field for the game and Rice shot 33 percent.
For the game, the Owls were whistled for 18 fouls, while only 7 fouls were called on UMass. Rice also committed a season-low 12 turnovers and UMass turned it over 15 times.
The Owls now will play either the host school, the University of Miami, or Long Beach State on Saturday at 4 p.m. (Central).
