
Long Beach State Beats Rice 68-64

Miami, Fla. - Rice sophomore forward Jackie Stanley posted a double-double, her first of the season, with game and career-high points (24) and rebounds 11), but it was not enough as the Owls lost 68-64 to Long Beach State in the consolation game of the Wyndham Miami Thanksgiving Tournament at the BankUnited Center. Long Beach State (3-3) had four players in double-digit scoring led by Karina Figueroa's 17 points and 5 assists. Figueroa was 11-13 from the free throw line and 3-9 from the field. Ally Wade scored 12 points with 7 rebounds, while Melanie Lisnock added 11 points, and LaTorya Barbee scored 10.
Junior Morgan Mayse was the only other Owl in double-digits with a season-high 17 points with 5 rebounds. Guards, senior Tara Watts and freshman Jessica Goswitz, each scored 8 points. Senior point guard Shyrelle Horne dished out a career-high 8 assists for Rice (0-6).
Stanley played a season-high 31 minutes and was 9-20 from the field and 6-6 at the free throw line. She also had 1 assist, 1 block, and a steal. She was also named to the all-tournament team.
The Owls held a slim half-time lead at 29 to 28, but was outscored 40 to 35 in the second-half. Rice, for the game, made 24 field goals to the LBSU's 23, including 6 three-pointers to the opposition's 5. But, Long Beach State made 17 of 24 free throws, while the Owls converted 10 of their 14 attempts.
Rice scored 19 second chance points in outrebounding the 49ers 51 to 37, but LBSU tallied 20 points off of 22 Rice miscues.
The Owls host the Gene Hackerman Invitational next weekend Dec. 4-5 in Tudor Fieldhouse. On Friday, Sam Houston State plays Jackson State at 5 p.m., while Rice vs. UT-Pan American tips off shortly afterwards.
