IRVING, Tex. -- Rice senior Angela Wo was named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, while Anastasia Pozdniakova of Houston earned Diver of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday (Nov. 24) from its headquarters in Irving, Tex.
Last week Wo took the prestigious Nebraska Cornhusker Invitational swim meet by storm. The Owls' hometown standout from Hightower High School won two individual events and swam on both of Rice's two winning relays at the home pool of the Big 12 power. She won the 100-yard butterfly over a field of 29 competitors with a season-best time of 56.10. The mark is the second-best 100-butterfly in Conference USA this season. Wo won the 100-backstroke with a season- and team-best time of 57.87. She also swam the lead leg of the Owls' winning 200-medley relay and sprint relay teams.
In addition to the victories, Wo registered a season-best 24.47 in the prelims of the 50-freestyle for one of the Top 10 times in the conference this year. She swam a 53.58 on the lead leg of the Owls' 4x100 freestyle relay that is now among the C-USA leaders.
Pozdniakova won the one-meter and three-meter diving events at UH. The Cougar senior has won both diving events in every competition this season.
The Rice swim team returns to action with a dual meet against longtime rival Texas A&M on Dec. 5. The meet against the nationally-ranked Aggies is scheduled for 2 pm in College Station, Tex.
