Swimmers Finish Second At Cornhusker Invitational

LINCOLN, Neb -- True freshman Stephanie Wei led a 1-2 Rice finish in the 200-yard backstroke as the Owl swimmers wrapped-up action at the annual Cornhusker Invitational Sunday (Nov. 22) in Lincoln, Neb.
Host Nebraska won the four-team, four-day meet with a total of 1,901 points. Rice placed second (1,309 points) while South Dakota State finished third (725.5 points) and the University of Nebraska-Omaha was fourth (568.5).
Wei won the 200-backstroke among a field of 34 competitors with her best time of the year. The rookie from Cupertino, Calif., posted a 2:03.37 that was just ahead of teammate Kait Chura (2:04.75) for a 1-2 Owl finish. Sophomore Nicole Delaloye scored for the Blue & Gray with a 2:11.11 to take seventh in the event's championship final.
Rice had strong swims from Erin Mattson and Angela Wo in the 200-butterfly. Mattson notched a season-best 2:06.60 for third place and Wo swam a 2:07.71 for fourth overall. Karen Gerken registered a season-best 2:13.52 for seventh while Ashten Ackerman was eighth (2:14.51) and Danielle Spence was tenth (2:19.96).
The Owls finished in almost identical spots in two other events. In the 200-breaststroke Alex O'Brien was fourth (2:22.04) while Ackerman was fifth (2:23.27). In the 100-freestyle Shelby Bottoms matched her best time of the year (53.23) to take fourth. Pam Zelnick improved on her season-best to finish fifth with a 53.50. Kim Steinhouse was seventh (53.55) in the 100-free and Mattson was ninth (53.71).
