BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB scored the first 12 points of the game and would not give up the double-figure advantage the remainder of the contest en route to a 78-40 win over Rice Saturday at Bartow Arena.
Robert Vaden led UAB with 21 points while four teammates also scored in double figures. Howard Crawford had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Blazers while Paul Delaney III finished with 18 points and seven boards.
Delaney and Channing Toney helped spark UAB's 12-0 start. After Lawrence Kinnard knocked down a three-pointer to give the Blazers an 8-0 lead, Delaney had steals on back-to-back possessions. He went the distance for a fastbreak dunk following the first. Toney capped the next possession with another fastbreak dunk off a Vaden pass to end another fastbreak and put the Blazers out in front 12-0.
In addition to his 18-point game, Delaney had six steals and three assists.
After Aleks Perka finally got the Owls on the board with a layup, UAB would outscore Rice 14-5 over the next seven-plus minutes to extend its lead to 26-7 with 6:43 to play in the first half.
UAB scored 18 points off 11 first-half turnovers and led 37-15 at halftime.
Over the final eight minutes of the game, Rice was held to just one free throw before Connor Frizzelle drove inside for a layup with 12 seconds to play for the final points of the game.
Rodney Foster was 0-for-5 shooting in the first half but knocked down a trio of three-pointers and scored 13 points in the second period to lead Rice.
With the win, UAB improved to 13-7 and 3-2 in Conference USA play. Rice is now 6-13 and 1-4 in league play. The Owls return home next Wednesday to play host to Tulane in a game which will be televised by CBS College Sports.

The weekly radio show will continue in its 7-7:30 p.m. Monday time slot on ESPN 97.5 The Ticket but will now have a live audience.
