Chase Clement and Jarett Dillard have been named the Conference USA Offensive players of the week for the games of September 27, the conference office announced today.
This is the third time in their career's that each player has received the conference's weekly award. Clement was recognized in 2006 for his performance against Army and last season he shared the honor with Chris Johnson of ECU for his effort against UTEP. Dillard was previously honored twice in 2006, for his games against UAB and SMU.
Clement and Dillard became the most productive passing combination in NCAA history on Saturday against North Texas. The duo combined on three touchdown passes to raise their career total to 41, breaking the previous record of 39 set first by Tim Rattay and Troy Edwards of Louisiana Tech and tied last year by Colt Brennan and Devone Bess of Hawaii.
Dillard caught four touchdowns on the day to tie the NCAA record for career touchdown catches with 50. His four TD catches in a game tied the conference mark and set a Rice school record. On the day, Dillard caught eight passes for 114 yards and he has 10 TDs in the first five games this year, which is three better than he had through five games in 2006 when he finished with 21 TD catches.
Clement was 22-of-28 for 298 yards and five touchdown passes, and rushed 10 times for 69 yards and two more scores on the day. His seven touchdowns responsible for was the second-best effort in C-USA history, just one shy of his total of eight (six passing, two rushing) against UTEP last season. The duo was also named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Offensive Players of the Week.
