IRVING, Tex. -- Rice freshman Shelby Bottoms has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Tex., on Wednesday (Nov. 26). East Carolina's Meghan Coyne was named the C-USA Diver of the Week.
Last weekend Bottoms had some sensational performances in leading the Owls to the meet championship over eight other teams at the annual Nebraska Cornhusker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. (Nov. 20-23). Bottoms swept both individual medley events, swam the third leg of Rice's winning 400-freestyle relay and reached the championship final of both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle.
The Houston native from nearby Lamar High School won the 400-IM with a career-best time of 4:26.43, the best time in Conference USA so far this season. Bottoms won the 200-IM with a 2:05.45 that is the second-best time in the league. She finished sixth among 85 entrants in the Invitational's 200-freestyle and made the championship finals of the 100-fee with a collegiate-best time of 52.81.
The C-USA Award is the first of Bottom's career, but it's the second time for an Owl swimmer to earn the C-USA award in as many weeks. Rice junior Pam Zelnick earned the honor last week for her swims at the Phill Hansel Dual Meets.
