IRVING, Tex. -- Rice junior Pam Zelnick has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Tex., on Tuesday (Nov. 18). Houston's Anastasia Pozdniakova was named the C-USA Diver of the Week.
Last weekend Zelnick won the 50-yard freestyle among a field of 25 entrants at the annual Phill Hansel Duals across town at the University of Houston. She posted a mark of 24.05 for the second-best time in Conference USA this season. Zelnick swam well on both of the Owls' winning relays.
The Troy, Ohio, native was the first leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay and the breaststroke leg of the 200-yard medley relay to help the Blue & Gray to a pair of victories. She also swam the second-best time in the league in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.58) on her way to a second-place finish in that event. The weekly C-USA award is the second of Zelnick's career and her first in 2008-09.
Zelnick and the Owl swimmers will next be in action at the Cornhusker Invitational on Nov. 20-23 in Lincoln, Neb.
