
Owls Third at C-USA Cross Country Championship

The Rice Owls men's cross country team placed third for the fourth straight year at the Conference USA Cross Country Championship in Memphis, Tenn. The Owls scored 84 points which is an improvement from last year's team total of 110. Tulsa won the team title with 27 points.
The 16th-ranked Tulsa men bettered it second-place showing from the last two years with its first C-USA championship title since joining the league in 2005. The Golden Hurricane was led by individual medalist John Beattie's 8K time of 23:30. The junior outkicked UTEP's Japheth Ngo'joy down the stretch to become the first non-Miner individual champion since 2005. Tulsa also claimed four of the seven All-C-USA first team honors as Eddie Henshaw finished fifth (24:04), Kyle Dekker placed sixth (24:22) and Lewis Timmins was seventh (24:28).
The three-time C-USA team champion UTEP Miners saw its streak end Saturday but placed all five runners among the Top 12 finishers. Ngo'joy (23:31), Patrick Mutai (23:45) and Nicodemus Ngetich (23:53) claimed three of the top four spots for All-C-USA first team accolades. Ngo'joy second-place finish earned him Outstanding Senior of the Year honors.
Freshman of the Year merits went to East Carolina's Zack Montijo. Montijo was also named to the All-C-USA second team after finishing 13th with a time of 25:14. Head coach Steve Gulley was named the men's Coach of the Year.
Rice men came in third-place before all-conference performances by its top-five scorers. Leading the Owls were All-C-USA first teamers Aaron Robson (25:07) and Simon Bucknell (25:30) who placed 11th and 16th overall, respectively.
Marshall came in fourth (114), while East Carolina (145), Houston (156), Memphis (175) and Tulane (235) rounded out the men's results.
