CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Led by junior Aaron Robson's third-place finish, the Rice men took second on Friday evening at the Islander Splash Cross Country Invitational hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Owls scored 44 points, 20 behind the host Islanders who had their top five finishers place in the top 10. Rice out-distanced third-place Stephen F. Austin State which tallied 103 points. Also in the top five were Texas-Pan American (130) and Prairie View A&M (173). A total of 12 teams and 94 competitors raced on Friday.
Robson (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) led a 3-7-11-12-14 finish by the Owls as he completed the 8K course in 25:56, just three seconds out of second place. Sophomore Brad Morris (Peachtree City, Ga.) was next for Rice, finishing in 26:34. Junior Brett Olson (Flower Mound, Texas) completed the course in 26:57 to edge classmate Justin Maxwell (Westside HS) by three seconds. Sophomore Scott Zivick (Humble HS) closed out the Owls' scoring, crossing the line in 27:10 for 14th place.
Shadrack Songok of TAMU-CC, who won the Rice Invitational two weeks ago, was again victorious on Friday completing the course in 25:20, a full 33 seconds ahead of Luis Nava of UTPA.
Next on the slate for the Owls is a trip to Fayetteville, Ark., on Oct. 13 for the Chili Pepper Meet, which will be Rice's final tune-up before the Conference USA championships on Oct. 27 in El Paso.
