Sacramento, Calif. -
Rice senior Funmi Jimoh overcame an ankle injury midway through the competition to finish fifth in the long jump Thursday at the NCAA Track & Field Championships at Hornet Stadium. Jimoh twisted her ankle on her third attempt, but after repeated taping she recovered enough to uncork a 6.43 meters/21-1.25 leap on her fifth attempt and earn her first all-America award.
Junior distance ace Marissa Daniels raced to a lifetime best in the 10,000 meters late Thursday, taking 11th with a 33:57.37 and earning her first all-America honors.
"Funmi really showed a lot of toughness today," said Owls head coach Jim Bevan. "To come back from an injury like that during her first-ever trip to the NCAA meet shows just how good she is."
Rhonda Watkins of UCLA won the event with a wind-aided 6.96/22-10 on her third attempt.
