HOUSTON – Following a sensational season for Rice women's track and field, senior Mckyla Van der Westhuizen was named the USTFCCCA South-Central Field Athlete of the Year, while Brek Christensen was honored as the Assistant Coach of the Year, the organization announced.
"What a tremendous honor and much-deserved recognition for these two," women's track and field head coach Jim Bevan said. "Mckyla being the regional field athlete of the year amongst some of the top athletes in the nation is incredible. Such a rewarding recognition to cap off an incredible career, on top of the national title, off the all-time clutch performance in program history. I am also so proud of Brek and happy to see him continue to get national recognition. He has put in so much time and effort into Rice track and field, and it is so great to see him get all the success, recognition and accolades for his hard work over the years."
Van der Westhuizen became the first national champion in 24 years for Rice women's track and field, following a school record throw of 60.87m to jump into first place on the final round of throws. She finished her career with a third consecutive First Team All-American honor and fourth honor overall.
Christensen helped guide Van der Westhuizen to the national title in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Christensen had three women's javelin throwers advance to the NCAA West Prelims, with the trio adding 21 points at the American Championships en route to the team title for Rice.
