
Jimoh Wins Long Jump to Lead Owls at Cal

Funmi Jimoh won the long jump with the best legal-wind mark of her career and Naquanza Alfred raced to gold in the 800-meters to lead Rice's women's track and field team at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational Saturday at Cal's Edwards Stadium. Jimoh's 6.46 meters/21-2.5 leap was also the fourth-best by an American this season.
The start of the meet was delayed two hours due to rainy conditions.
Alfred clocked 2:11.97 to win the two-lapper by more than half a second, while Susie Barrows was the other individual champion for the Owls, as she was victorious in the 5000-meters with a lifetime best of 17:20.70. Rice's 4x400 relay won gold at 3:52.05.
In other action on the track, Lennie Waite had a solid middle-distance double, placing second in the 1500 at 4:33.05, and third in the 800 with a 2:12.55 clocking. Chandra Ewing was runner-up in the 400 hurdles at 61.75, and Desarie Walwyn was second in the 100 (11.93) and third in the 200 (24.35). The Owls' 4x100 relay placed second at 46.23.
Field event highlights included a third-place effort by Shardee Caesar in the triple jump (12.00m/39-4.5).
Late Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., Marissa Daniels turned in a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA national championships, running 34:07.04 to take third in the invitational 10,000.
