HOUSTON -- The No. 27 Rice men served up a 5-1 victory Abilene Christian, ranked 28th nationally among NCAA Division II schools, on Tuesday evening in dual match action at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
Tobias Scheil quickly put the Owls ahead 1-0 as he blasted Kevin Beedy 6-0, 6-0 at four singles. The Wildcats answered back with a win at two singles to even the team score. Dennis Polyakov handed Rice the lead for good when he swept Luke Hawk 6-1, 7-5 at six. Playing at five, Hoony Shin defeated Bryce Hicks 6-0, 6-4 as the Owls took a 3-1 advantage.
After winning his first set, Jason Mok rallied from a 5-3 deficit and facing triple set point at 5-4 to defeat George Carstens 6-3, 7-5 at three singles to clinch the team win. At the top spot, No. 28 Ben Harknett rallied from a set back to defeat 45th-ranked Juan Nunez 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 to close out the scoring.
Doubles was not played.
The Owls improve to 13-8 on the year heading their final two regular season matches. Rice hosts SMU on Friday at 1:30 pm, then face No. 18 Michigan on Sunday at 11 am. Both matches are slated for the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
Rice also serves as the host of the 2007 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship, April 20-22 at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
