SALT LAKE CITY -- In a marathon match that lasted almost five hours, Rice was edged by Utah 4-3 in dual-match competition late Tuesday in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Utes held the early advantage in doubles, winning at No. 3, before the matches at one and two went down to the wire. At No. 2, Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh held off the Owls' Tiffany Lee and Christine Dao for a 9-8 (4) win at Utah snared the doubles point. It was a similar battle at No. 1, where the Utes' Emily Kwok and Cheyenne Reveche out-lasted Rice's Dominique Karas and Julie Chao 9-8 (7).
In singles, the Owls' Rebecca Lin quickly knotted the score, beating Jessica Carter 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. The Utes then built their lead to 3-1 with wins at the one and two positions. Lee answered back for Rice with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory at No. 3.
Utah clinched the match with a decision at No. 6, before Karas scored the last point for the Owls, defeating Reveche 7-6 (4), 6-2 at the four spot.
The Owls continue their current road trip on Thursday as they face off with No. 29 BYU in Provo, Utah at noon.
