Houston -
Five meet records fell Friday on the first day of the 25th annual Victor Lopez Bayou Classic track and field meet at Rice Track and Soccer Stadium, led by prep speedsters D.J. Monroe and Terrell McNeil in the boys high school 100-meter dash. Monroe zipped to a 10.61 in the fourth heat to lop .22 seconds off the record set in 2003 by Humble's Carey LaCour, and McNeil also dipped under the old standard with his 10.69 in the seventh heat.
Clear Brook's Maston Wallace, who had the best prep indoor mark in the nation this year, had a meet-record and state-leading 16-8 clearance to win the boys pole vault and shatter the previous meet record of 15-0.
Kenneth Charles of Fort Bend Hightower added more than nine feet to the boys discus meet record, spinning the platter 177-9. Other meet records went to former Rice runner David Axel, who won the men's 3000 steeplechase in 9:05.29, and Lamar's Amanda King, who beat her own standard with her winning 10:34.40 in the women's 3000 steeplechase.
Rice's Pablo Solares won the men's 1500 meters in 3:46.34 to qualify for the NCAA Midwest Regional meet in May, and Lennie Waite and Naquanza Alfred had stellar showings for the Owls in the women's 1500, recording personal bests. Waite was third at 4:34.80, while Alfred used a sizzling last lap to clock 4:45.97.
Marissa Daniels was third in the women's 5000 at 17:28.25, and freshman Nicole Mericle was third in her 3000 steeplechase debut at 11:15.85.
Competition resumes Saturday at 9:30 am with the men's shot put, and running event finals start at 11 am. Real-time results will be available at www.cfpitiming.com, weather permitting.
