HOUSTON -- After playing four of their last five on the road, the Rice women celebrated their return home with a commanding 7-0 dual-match victory against Columbia on Friday afternoon at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
The Owls secured the first point of the day with wins at two and three doubles. Dominique Karas and Rebecca Lin struck first with their 8-3 victory at No. 2 against Nina Suda and Anna Varnay. Then at No. 3, Christine Dao and Kimberley Patenaude posted an 8-5 decision against Lauren Shearer and Allison Cordell at No. 3.
Rice picked up the pace in singles as Dao and Tiffany Lee made quick work of their opponents to put the Owls ahead 3-0. Dao beat Suda 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, while Lee finished immediately after with her 6-3, 6-0 decision against Carling Donovan. Emily Braid clinched the Owls' team victory at No. 6 singles, beating Cordell 6-4, 6-1.
Karas pushed the team score to 5-0, downing Shearer 6-3, 6-1 at the four spot. Julie Chao then defeated Milena Kachar 7-5, 6-3 at the top of the ladder. Closing out the day and securing the sweep, Lin rallied to beat Varnay 5-7, 7-5, 10-8.
The Owls continue their home stand on March 24, hosting longtime foe SMU at 3 pm at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
