Owls Succumb To Mustangs 4-1

HOUSTON -- In a match that did not start until 8 pm due to area rains, then lasted over four hours, the Rice women's late rally came up short as No. 62 SMU held on for a 4-1 win on Saturday at the Downtown Club at the Met in Houston.
The Mustangs opened the match by first taking the doubles point, then grabbing straight-set wins at four and two singles. Emily Braid rallied from a set back to get the Owls on the board with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 triumph against Kristen Reid at No. 6 singles. Meanwhile, her teammates were battling into their third sets at one, three and five singles.
Battling both her opponent and a sore back, Tiffany Lee was edged by SMU's Claire Rietsch 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 at No. 3 as the Mustangs clinched the match. With the outcome decided, the final two matches were suspended. At No. 1, Julie Chao had rallied from a set back and was dueling Natalia Bubien in a third set tiebreak when the match was suspended, while Rebecca Lin and Georgiana Marta were also stalemated in the third set.
The Owls continue their home stand on Friday, hosting Texas-Pan American at 1:30 pm at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
