Hattiesburg, Miss. -
Krystal Frazier scored a season-high 23 points and Samantha Stovall recorded her second career double-double to lead Rice past Southern Miss 65-44 Friday at Reed Green Coliseum. Frazier was 10-17 from the field to help the Owls improve to 14-10 overall and 7-4 in Conference USA play, while the Lady Eagles dropped to 11-13 and 5-6.
Southern Miss started the game strong, building a five-point lead on a Kendra Reed three-pointer with 15:59 left. The Lady Eagles kept the lead for the next six minutes before Maudess Fulton hit a jumper to put Rice ahead 14-13. Kristin Chaney hit a free throw for USM to tie the game, then the Owls went on a 16-4 run to end the half with a 30-18 lead. Southern Miss turned the ball over 14 times in the first half, and shot only 38.1 percent from the field.
Kadie Riverin scored the first four points of the second half for Rice after she was intentionally fouled by Chaney on a basket, converting both charity shots. Liz Biland scored for the Lady Eagles with 15:14 to go to cut the Owls' lead to 36-22, but Frazier popped in seven quick points to make it 43-22 two minutes later. Rice kept the lead above 15 for the rest of the game, stretching it to 24 on a Riverin jumper with 7:16 on the clock. Biland led a final challenge by USM with a pair of treys, but a pair of long distance shots by Frazier and Tara Watts sealed the win in Rice's first-ever game in Hattiesburg.
Stovall had 10 points and 11 boards in another solid showing for the Owls, and Lauren Neaves added 13 points. Riverin had six assists.
Reed was the scoring leader for the Lady Eagles, dumping in 13 points, while Biland had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Lauren Pittman chipped in 10 points in the loss, and Chaney handed out a game-high eight assists.
