Rice Sweeps Singles To Beat San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- The No. 71 Rice women won all six singles matches to get back in the win column with a 6-1 victory at No. 70 San Diego on Thursday afternoon.
Tiffany Lee and Julie Chao teamed for a commanding 8-1 victory against Sophia Vogt and Zoe Taylor at No. 1 doubles to start the day for the Owls. The Toreros then rallied to take the doubles point with wins at the two and three positions.
Despite the early setback, the Owls came out strong in singles. A default at No. 6 by San Diego tied the team score at 1-1, while Chao made quick work of Helene Lindstrand at No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Playing at No. 4, Dominique Karas stormed back from a set down for a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 triumph against Alexandra Demidova to put Rice ahead 3-1. Rebecca Lin then clinched the match for the Owls at No. 5 as she downed Justine Perl 6-4, 6-2.
Closing out the scoring for Rice, Christine Dao split the first two sets before her Torero opponent, Samantha Mouly, was forced to retire with an injury. Lee ended the day for the Owls by rallying past Taylor for a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 win at the three position.
The Owls continue their California trek on Saturday, taking on No. 52 San Diego State at 2 pm (CST).
