WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Maudess Fulton scored 16 first half points but Wake Forest outscored the Rice women's basketball team 48-18 in the second half en route to a 79-46 win Sunday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum on the Wake Forest campus.
The Owls (5-5) hung tough in the opening half as Fulton connected on 6-of-8 from the floor, including a trio of three-point baskets. The opening half featured three ties and eight lead changes before Wake Forest (7-1) carried a 31-28 edge into the locker room behind nine points from Alex Tchangoue.
The Demon Deacons defense took control of the game, holding the Rice offense without a field goal for the first 10:26 of the second half and to a pair of field goals until the 5:08 mark before Memri Carmon scored her first collegiate points on a three-pointer. During that span, Wake Forest went on a 35-5 run.
"We came out intense in the first half and did an excellent job of staying within the gameplan on both sides of the court," assistant coach Carlos Quintero said. "Our effort wasn't as strong in the second half. We were challenged by Wake Forest, and we played on our heels."
Tchangoue finished with 16 points, while Corinne Groves added 13 points and seven rebounds. Mekia Valentine tallied 11 points in 15 minutes off the bench for the Demon Deacons.
Valeriya Berezhynska was held to nine points. It was the first time in nine games this season that the Rice center was held to single digits.
Rice concluded a stretch of nine out of 10 games to start of the season away from the city of Houston. The Owls take on former Southwest Conference rival TCU Thursday at Houston Baptist's Sharp Gym. Tip-off against the Horned Frogs is set for 7:30pm CT. KTRU 91.7 FM and RiceOwls.com will have all of the action live from HBU.
"It's been a rollercoaster ride to start the season," Quintero said. "Returning home should get us back on track and help out our confidence. We need to get back to executing the fundamentals and playing Rice basketball."
