The Rice Owls begin the 2007-08 season at TCU on Tuesday night. Action gets underway at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum at 7 pm. The Owls lead the overall series 88-83.
vs. the TCU Horned Frogs The Owls and TCU meet for the first time since Feb. 10, 2001, when Rice defeated the Horned Frogs 76-72 to sweep the season series after winning 73-66 in Ft. Worth. Rice is 31-51 vs. TCU in games played in Ft. Worth.
TCU is 1-0 on the year after defeating Angelo State 89-70 this past Saturday. Brent Hackett (19 points) and Alvardo Parker (18 points) led TCU in scoring.
Rice defeated Incarnate Word 76-63 in an exhibition game last Wednesday. The Owls placed five players in double-figures. Guards Cory Pflieger and Chris Hagan each scored 16 points, while Patrick Britton tallied 14 and Bryan Beasley added 13. Paulius Packevicius led the Owls with 7 rebounds.
Head Coach Willis Wilson Rice is coached by Willis Wilson, who is in his 16th season as head coach of his alma mater. Wilson's school and career record stands at 216-219. Overall, he is in his 23rd year at the University. After enrolling in 1978 and playing basketball for four years, Wilson earned his degree in political science in 1982. He served five years as an assistant at Rice and one at Stanford before being named head coach in 1992. In 2004, he was named the NABC District 9 Coach of the Year.
Seniors Rice's only two seniors are Patrick Britton and Paulius Packevicius. Britton is a three-year starter and a top defender in Conference USA, while Packevicius started 20 games last season for the Owls. The duo are Rice's leading returning rebounders with Packevicius averaging 4.1 rebounds and Britton just behind at 4.0.
Sharp Shooter Junior Cory Pflieger ranked second in 3FG percentage at 46.3 percent during C-USA action and he ranked third overall at 42 percent. Pflieger also ranked 15th in 3FGs made per game at 1.56.
Foster Introduced Junior Rodney Foster started the last three games of last season, all in the C-USA Championship for his first career starts. The Owls went 2- 1 in those games.
Assist Man Sophomore Chris Hagan is the Owls' leading returning assist man. Hagan passed out 77 assists as a freshman last season to rank second on the team behind Lorenzo Williams (146).
