GREENVILLE, NC -- East Carolina scored a goal in the 88th minute of the contest for a 1-0 Conference USA win over the visiting Rice soccer team at Bunting Field on the ECU campus Sunday afternoon in Greenville, NC.
The Owls' first C-USA loss of the season knocked the team from the league's unbeaten ranks to 3-1-1. It was also Rice's first loss in six games dating back almost a full month to Sept. 23. East Carolina remained undefeated on its home field (8-0-0) to move into a tie with Rice in the C-USA standings. The Pirates are 3-1-1 in conference and 9-2-3 in all games.
The Owls held a sizable 8-1 advantage in corner kicks, but shots were hard to come by for either team. There were only 11 by shots both teams in the defensive-minded game and Rice had more atempts. 6-5. The Blue & Gray saw its best chance to score go just off the mark when sophomore midfielder Shelley Wong hit the left post in the 75th minute. Forward Caitlin Robbins had a shot on-goal in the 88th minute just after the ECU score, but the attempt was corralled for a Pirate save. Rice was held scoreless for only the second time all season.
The Rice defenders were also playing well. The Pirate team that had averaged more than 10.6 shots per game was held to just five. The lone score of the game was in the 88th minute when midfielder Amber Broz connected on an attempt from 10 yards out after a direct free kick from a Rice foul. The goal was Broz' third of the season.
Rice went 1-1 to close out its current weekend road swing. The Owls concluded their weekend two-game road swing, but the team is only halfway through a stretch of four-straight C-USA contests away from home. Rice is back on the road next week for games at SMU (Oct. 26) and Tulsa (Oct. 28). The start times are 7 pm and 1 pm, respectively.
