DALLAS -- The Rice soccer team had twice as many shots and three times as many corner kicks in the game, but it was SMU that claimed a 2-0 Conference USA win over the visiting Owls at Friday evening at the Mustangs' Westcott Field in Dallas.
After both defenses dug in a scoreless first half, SMU pushed across a pair of second half goals. Rice was held scoreless for the second time in as many conference games to suffer a second-straight defeat on the road. The Owls wrap-up the stretch of four-consecutive road games with a C-USA contest Sunday afternoon at Tulsa.
Rice outshot SMU 8-4 in the second half and 11-5 for the game, but could not convert the chances into scores. In the 56th minute, SMU's Allison Brill served a direct free kick near the right Rice endline into traffic in front of the Owls' goal. Caitlin Carter broke free and scored her second goal of the season on a shot from eight yards out.
In the 77th minute, Mustang forward Kimber Bailey made a long pass that found Brittainy Vice on the left wing. Vice's shot from 14 yards out found the back of the Rice net on the right side. The Ponies made the most of their opportunities as the Rice defenders held the league's preseason favorite to just five shots for the 90 minutes. The five shots, including just four on-goal, is the Mustangs' lowest total in nine career meetings between the two state rivals.
Seven of Rice's shots were saved by SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter. Owl junior Caitlin Robbins and the freshman tandem of Korey Taylor and Kate Edwards all had two shots on-goal in the second half.
Rice is now 9-5-2 on the season and 3-2-1 in C-USA play. SMU improved to 6-7-1 overall and 2-5-0 against the league. The Blue & Gray can pull even on its four-game road swing with a win Sunday against the Golden Hurricanes of Tulsa. The start time for the match is set for 1 pm.
