HOUSTON -- The Rice women's tennis team scored its second-straight 7-0 victory on Sunday with a win against Texas State at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
The Owls swept doubles, including a pair of 8-2 victories by Dominique Karas and Rebecca Lin at No. 2 and Tiffany Lee and Julie Chao at No. 1, to take the early 1-0 lead in team scoring.
Karas and Emily Braid also made quick work of their foes in singles to put Rice ahead 3-0. Karas struck first at the four position with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against the Bobcats' Alejandra Giraldo. Braid followed soon after with her matching 6-1, 6-1 decision against Natalie McLeod at No. 6. Christine Dao secured the team victory at No. 2 singles as she downed Lainy Chafitz 6-2, 6-0.
Chao and fellow freshman Rebecca Lin both scored 6-0, 6-3 victories at one and five singles, respectively. Then all eyes move to the battle taking place at No. 3. After fighting through a multitude of long rallies, the Owls' Lee ultimately edged the Bobcats' Rabea Hartman for a 5-7, 7-6 (5), 10-8 victory, securing the Rice shutout.
"I'm really pleased with how hard the girls played today," said head coach Roger White. "This was a good step heading into our tough matches next weekend with Oklahoma State and Tulsa. I'm especially proud of the kids, especially Tiffany, that when they struggled, they still found a way to get the job done."
The Owls hit the road next weekend with a trip to Tulsa, Okla. There they face the Golden Hurricane on Saturday and Oklahoma State on Sunday.
