Rice Wins Two Of Three Meets At LSU Quadrangular

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Junior distance specialist Brittany Massengale led a 1-2-3 Rice finish in the 500-yard freestyle as the Rice swim team won two of the three dual meets on the second day of competition at the LSU Quad Meet Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge, La.
In the three dual meets scored simultaneously, the Owls defeated Conference USA rival Houston 189-152 and the University of New Orleans 255-59. The Blue & Gray fell to meet host LSU 216-131. Rice closed out the dual meet portion of its 2006-07 schedule with a 10-6 record, the most wins for the Owls in the last five years.
Massengale followed Friday night's win in the 1,000-freestyle with another impressive victory in the 500 Saturday. The standout from Alma, Ark., registered a winning time of 5:00.10 to touch first ahead of her teammates Caitlin Warner (5:01.77) and Carlyann Miller, who swam a career-best 5:02.79 for third place.
Junior Jennifer Hill posted a season-best 4:34.40 to take second place in the 400-individual medley. Freshman Stephanie Eberhardt was third in the event with a Rice career-best 4:38.91.
Freshman Erin Mattson was second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.49 while Keri Hyde was third (2:09.10) and Angela Wo was fourth (2:11.29).
The Rice foursome of Miller, Skylar Craig, Pam Zelnick and Diane Gu combined to take second in the 200-freestyle relay (1:36.21). The Owls were fourth in the 400-medley relay (4:00.84).
Rice next competes in the C-USA championships on Feb. 14-17. The conference meet will be held across town at UH's Campus & Recreation Wellness Center Natatorium.
