HOUSTON -- The Rice women's tennis team got the home season started on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
The Owls match against Sam Houston State was cancelled Saturday morning due to inclement weather.
In doubles action, Christine Dao and Emily Braid struck first for the Owls with an 8-6 win against Lana Burton and Alexandra Valarezo at the three position. At No. 1 doubles, the Rice pair of Tiffany Lee and Julie Chao then won the doubles point for the Owls with their 8-5 win against Carmen Abeaboeru and Erika Iriarte. Dominique Karas and Rebecca Lin secured the doubles sweep with their 8-6 victory against Nina Ciric and Alexandra Dyckman.
The Owls were dominant in singles as well, as Chao was the first Owl off the court with her 6-2, 6-0 victory against Ciric at No. 3. Dao also scored a 6-2, 6-0 win, defeating Iriarte at the top spot. The team victory was secured by Lin at No. 4 singles as she beat Dyckman 6-1, 6-1.
"I'm really proud of the girls today, they played really tough," said head coach Roger White. "Often the difference between success and failure is your willingness to get in and dig for it and they did a good job today."
The Owls return to action on Sunday at 2 pm as they host Texas State at the Jake Hess tennis Stadium.
