Owls 2nd in Season Opener at Houston

Eunique Hamilton won the triple jump to lead Rice's women to a second-place finish at the Leonard Hilton Memorial track and field meet Friday at Yeoman fieldhouse in the Owls' season opener. Hamilton, a freshman from De Soto, had a best of 11.98 meters/39-3.75 to win in her collegiate debut.
Rice also won the distance medley relay with a time of 12:13.26, as freshman Nicole Mericle made up a four-second deficit on the anchor mile leg to finish more than a second ahead of Texas. The Owls tallied 91.5 points to finish behind the Lady Longhorns (134)in the 16-team meet.
Other medalists for the Owls included Chandra Ewing, second in the 400-meters with a time of 57.22, and Rachel Greff, who was third in the pole vault with a 3.65m/11-11.75 clearance. Naquanza Alfred also picked up third-place points in the 800-meters, clocking 2:15.83, while Desarie Walwyn was third in the 200 at 25.07.
Walwyn and freshman Shakera Reece tied for fourth in the 60-meter dash at 7.60.
