
Daniels, Washington Win at Houston Indoor Meet

Marissa Daniels won the 5000-meters, and freshman Brittany Washington led a 1-2 finish in the 400 to highlight Rice women's performances at the Houston Indoor Invitational Saturday at Yeoman Fieldhouse. Daniels took top honors in the 5k with a time of 17:42.65, while Washington clocked 56.86 to edge out teammate Chandra Ewing's 57.22 in the 400.
Freshman triple jumper Eunique Hamilton had another impressive effort, taking second with a season-best 12.21 meters/40-0.75, and Jenny Glover improved her best to 11.93m/39-1.75 to place third.
On the track, Callie Wells was second in the mile at 4:50.96, and Naquanza Alfred raced to a 2:14.08 to place fourth in the 800. Senior Kate Gorry led the Owls in the 3000 with a 9:56.19 for third, with Susie Barrows seventh at 10:08.91.
Other top-eight performances on the oval came from Lennie Waite, who was sixth in the mile and seventh in the 800, and Shakera Reece, who placed sixth in the 60 and the 200. Desarie Walwyn was one spot back in both sprints. Nicole Mericle debuted with an eighth-place finish in the mile, and the 4x400 squad was fifth with a season-best 3:48.81.
Friday evening, Rachel Greff matched her season best with a 3.65/11-11.75 clearance in the pole vault to place third.
