HOUSTON -- Rice junior forward Clory Martin scored three goals and passed out two assists, and the Owls' defense notched its fourth-straight shutout, as the soccer team remained undefeated by posting a 12-0 win over visiting crosstown foe Texas Southern Wednesday night at the Rice Soccer Stadium.
Martin scored the first two goals of the game on passes from freshman Shelly Wong in the eighth and ninth minute respectively. Wong registered a school record-tying third assist on freshman Erin Scott's goal in the 18th minute and junior Katlyn Ferguson added her first goal of the season in the 40th to give Rice a 4-0 lead for the first half. The Blue and Gray proceeded to add eight more goals in the second half to claim a 12-0 runaway and improve its record to 6-0-1 for the best start in school history.
Scott opened the scoring in the second half and a TSU own goal in the 54th minute made the score 6-0. In the 62nd minute junior defender Beth Martin made a long lass from the left wing to her twin sister Clory, who blasted a shot from 15 yards out for her third goal of the game and first career hat-trick. It was the first time the Martin duo had connected for a goal-and-assist play while at Rice.
Rice added two more goals from junior Traci Fraser and one each from Christine Petric, Kellen Schugart and Maria Fadool. On the night the Owls logged new team records for shots (66) and corner kicks (15) in a game. Martin set a new individual game record for points (8) and she tied the Rice single game marks for goals and shots on goal (6).
Almost lost in all the offensive fireworks was that the Rice defenders were in every bit of control as their offensive counterparts. The Owls' back row did not allow TSU to take a shot and the team recorded its fourth-straight shutout and fifth scoreless game in seven outings.
The Blue and Gray played the game without offensive stars Samantha Conn (a junior midfielder who was one of the national players of the week it was announced on Tuesday), Caitlin Robbins (an all-conference selection and the team's leading scorer from last season) and Anne Candee (the offensive MVP of the C-USA Tournament last season).
Rice next plays Stephen F. Austin on the road in Nacogdoches, Tex., on Sunday (Sept. 17). Start time with the Lady Jacks is scheduled for 2 pm.
