HOUSTON -- The Rice women stayed undefeated at home with their four-hour, 5-2 victory against Texas-Arlington on Saturday afternoon at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
Despite the Owls losing the doubles point, Rice's sophomore tandem of Christine Dao and Tiffany Lee won their third-straight match at number three, defeating the Mavericks' duo of Anete Rozkalne and Marissa Brown 8-5.
Senior Medeja Egic and freshman Emily Braid quickly got the Owls back on top with impressive wins at five and six singles, respectively. Egic blasted Rozkalne 6-1, 6-1 while Braid dropped Sara Pesil 6-0, 6-3. The win was Egic's third in a row as Rice took a 2-1 lead.
The rest of the Owls had their hands full with matches punctuated by long rallies. Dao and Lee finally secured the team victory in quick succession at the two and four positions, respectively. Dao rallied in the third set to beat Daniela Novakova 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, while Lee was beating Monika Peciulionyte 6-4, 6-4. Senior Blair DiSesa capped the team win with a marathon, two-set win at the top spot, dropping Klara Jagosova 6-4, 6-4.
The win improves Rice's record to 5-8, with all five wins at home. The Owls take some time off before continuing their six-match home stand on March 16, hosting Columbia at 10 am.
