HOUSTON -- After almost two weeks off the Rice women returned to dual-match action on Thursday with a 5-2 victory against Columbia at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
After early morning showers briefly delayed the start of the match, the teams opened with singles play. Freshman Emily Braid got the Owls off to a quick start with her dominating 6-0, 6-3 win against Anna Varnay at number six. Rice senior Blair DiSesa, ranked 54th nationally, added to the lead with her 6-2, 6-3 win against Milena Kachar at the top of the ladder.
The Lions got on the scoreboard with a win at two singles, before sophomore Tiffany Lee scored a 6-2, 6-3 win against Nina Suda at number four to put the Owls up 3-1 with two matches still to go. Playing at number five, senior Medeja Egic clinched the team victory for Rice, beating Molly Condit 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The Owls then swept through doubles to snag the final point of the day. Egic and sophomore Kimberley Patenaude won 8-6 at number two, then Lee and sophomore Christine Dao won their fourth straight with an 8-6 decision at three. DiSesa and freshman Alanna Rodgers capped the match with an 8-5 win at the top spot.
The win improves Rice's record to 6-8 on the year. The Owls hit the courts again on Friday afternoon, hosting 49th-ranked Sacramento State at 1:30 pm at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
