Houston -
Callie Wells won the mile and 3000 meters to help lead Rice to a second-place finish in the Conference USA women's indoor track and field championships at Yeoman Fieldhouse Saturday. Houston defended its team title with 141.5 points, to Rice's 126. UTEP finished third with 72. Wells was honored as the female performer of the meet after her double victory.
"I couldn't be more pleased with our total team effort," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "Across the board we had athletes step up and do some great things, and we made a real run at Houston. It's tough to knock off the defending champs on their home track."
Wells used a 32.5-second final 200 to run away with the mile title in a season-best 4:52.90, three seconds ahead of Tulsa's Alex Becker. Brandi Armstrong was seventh at 5:04.30. In the 3000, Wells ran in the lead with teammates Kate Gorry, Marissa Daniels and Sarah Yoder most of the way, outkicking Daniels down the stretch to win her second event of the day in 9:44.74. Daniels won silver at 9:46.78, while Yoder was fourth at 9:49.69 and Gorry was fifth at 9:54.25.
Flo Nwagwu soared to a season-best 1.73m/5-8 to claim the bronze in the high jump, and senior Funmi Jimoh, who was second in the long jump Friday, placed fourth in the 60 hurdles with a season-best 8.50, and added another season best in the high jump, clearing 1.73m/5-8 for fifth.
Desarie Walwyn raced to a fourth-place finish in the 200, clocking 24.68, and she added a seventh-place effort in the 60 at 7.55. Nina Mayes was fifth in the short sprint with a time of 7.53. Lennie Waite took sixth in the 800 at 2:17.29 and the 4x400 squad of Walwyn, Jimoh, Caesar and Chandra Ewing nabbed eighth with a time of 3:54.97.
The Owls got a pair of sixth-place efforts in the field events from Shardee Caesar and Ulrika Hinson. Caesar turned in her longest triple jump of the season at 11.79/38-8.25, while Hinson put the shot a season-best 13.16/43-2.25.
