
Owls Stumble at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The 57th -ranked Rice women suffered a 6-1 loss at the hands of 40th-ranked Purdue on Friday at West Lafayette, Ind.
The Owls started strong in doubles as Blair DiSesa and Alanna Rodgers teamed to beat the Boilermakers' Jala Sufi and Mallory Voelker 8-2 at the top spot. Purdue matched Rice with a win at number three then claimed the doubles point with a win at number two.
In singles, the Boilermakers swept the Owls at the two, three and four positions to secure the team victory. Rice continued to battle, though, with the final three matches heading the third-set super tiebreakers.
Kimberley Patenaude scored the Owls' only singles win with a 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (3) victory against Anna Dzeva at number six. DiSesa, ranked 31st, rallied from a set down but couldn't hold on to the momentum in the tiebreaker, finishing with a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (3) loss to 29th-ranked Sufi. Medeja Egic fell to Stephanie Wooten 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (8) at the six position.
The Owls, now 3-4 on the year, continue their stay in West Lafayette, Ind., facing off with 19th-ranked Kentucky on Sunday morning.
