After a dramatic win in the 200-yard butterfly last Saturday against fifth-ranked Texas A&M, Rice freshman Erin Mattson has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week for Nov. 28-Dec. 4 the league announced Tuesday from its headquarters in Dallas.
Mattson won the 200-fly with a season-best time of 2:05.21 and she was also a member of Rice's winning 200-freestyle relay team in the Owls' only meet last week, a dual on the road against the fifth-ranked Aggies (Dec. 2). Mattson led from start to finish for her victory in the 200-fly. Not only was her winning time the Owls' best mark of the year, it is actually Rice's best in two years dating back to Urska Ross' school record set in the spring of 2005. The Rice rookie from Highland, Ill., came back later in the meet and swam a strong third leg of 200-free relay as the Owls posted a winning time of 1:38.10.
Mattson is the second Owl this season to be named the conference swimmer of the week. Sophomore sprinter Diane Gu earned the C-USA honor on Nov. 8.
